It’s tempting to welcome the end of 2016, and hope it signals a change in our collective fortunes. Maybe 2017 could bring a little less lying, a little less hostility in public discourse. Maybe we could all just try a little harder. It just doesn’t seem terribly likely.
It's possible the killing of Jo Cox might prompt us to reflect on what kind of politics we want, what kind of debate we want to engage in... that it took a murder to make us do that is shameful.
As a rule, people don’t like being pushed around. In a campaign where Leave supporters say they’ve had enough of Brussels diktats, this “vote Remain or else” plan could push more waverers towards the Leave camp.
For some on the Brexit side, too much has been said.... they may lose the referendum, but win a final victory in a purge of Remainers, starting at the very top.
